The real cost of recruitment agency fees for growing teams
Contingency fees add up fast. Here is how to think about what agencies really cost and where your own network can replace them.
Recruitment agencies solve a real problem: they bring candidates when you do not have the time or reach to find them yourself. But for a growing team that hires every quarter, the fees quietly become one of the largest lines in the people budget.
How agency fees are usually structured
Most contingency agreements charge a percentage of the hire’s first-year base salary, commonly somewhere between 15 and 25 percent, and higher for retained executive search. The fee is due when the candidate starts, often with a short guarantee period if they leave early.
Take a simple example. A senior engineer at a $180,000 base salary placed at a 20 percent fee costs $36,000. Hire five roles like that in a year and you have spent $180,000 on fees alone, before salaries, equity, or onboarding.
The costs that do not show up on the invoice
- Context loss: agencies know the job description, not the team. Candidates can arrive mismatched on culture or expectations.
- Shared pipelines: the same candidates are often pitched to several of your competitors at once.
- Dependence: every role you outsource is a role your own team does not learn to fill.
Where your own network fits
Not every hire can come from your network, and there will always be specialist searches where an agency earns its fee. But many of the roles growing teams outsource are exactly the roles their own people already know candidates for: engineers, sellers, designers, operators.
The question to ask before calling an agency is simple: have we actually searched everyone our team knows? For most companies the honest answer is no, because there has never been a way to do it.
A better default
- Search your team’s network first for every new role.
- Reach out through warm introductions before going to market.
- Bring in an agency only when the network search comes up short.
SocialSweep makes the first step practical. We onboard your organization, bring your team’s networks into one search, and help recruiters find warm candidates before an invoice is ever on the table. One or two hires a year that would otherwise have gone to an agency can change the economics of your entire recruiting function.
